First Nations community dinner set to improve disaster preparedness
In a vibrant celebration of culture and community spirit, Council is delighted to host a First Nations Community Dinner and invites members of the Gladstone Region’s First Nations communities to attend. The event is being held to bring members of the Gladstone Region’s First Nations community together with local leaders and disaster resilience experts to help build resilience and unity in the face of disasters. This event will enhance community resilience and safety by better preparing First Nations community members to respond and recover from disasters, and will focus on the:
Intrinsic strengths and unique impacts of disasters on Indigenous communities
Importance of connection with Country
Need for engagement with Indigenous communities in disaster preparedness and recovery planning
Role of Indigenous community-controlled organisations in disaster preparedness, response, and recovery.
Gladstone Region Deputy Mayor and Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) Reference Group Co-Chair Councillor Natalia Muszkat said it is important to understand that First Nations people can experience disasters in unique ways when damage occurs to Country as a result.
“First Nations people and organisations can bring their unique perspectives to the table to enhance disaster preparedness and recovery.” Councillor Muszkat said.

WHEN: 6pm-8pm, Wednesday 16 October. Arrive at 5.30pm to allow time for seating arrangements. WHERE: Flavours Marina, 72 Bryan Jordan Drive, Callemondah
COST: Free – dinner provided
